Joint Collaborations
In a ceremony on May 19, IEER Director Dr. Md. Abdur Rahman Bhuiyan and Executive Director of NSET (Nepal), signed a Scientific and Technical Collaboration Agreement. Prof. Md. Jahangir Alam (VC of CUET) and Prof. Mohammad Rafiqul Alam (Pro-VC of CUET) were present there. IEER and NSET are linked by common interests and objectives including building a better understanding of earthquake loss potential, and establishing relations in the scientific and technical fields related to earthquake engineering and related sciences. The objective of the agreement is to promote and sponsor collaboration between the organizations, with the goal of participating jointly in scientific and technical activities in areas of common interest related to earthquake engineering and risk reduction.
A joint collaboration agreement was signed in 1999 between the department of Civil Engineering, CUET and Institute of Earthquake Engineering & Engineering Seismology (IZIIS) of University St. Cyril and Methodius, Skopje, which is situated in Macedonia of Europe. As a result of this agreement three teachers of this university attended and received International Post Graduate Studies Degree on Earthquake Engineering & Engineering Seismology.
The Coordinator of IEER visited in 2006 to GFZ, Potsdam and University of KASSEL (UNIKA) of Germany, CEA Saclay of France and JRC, Ispra of Italy to see different laboratories and research projects on Earthquake Engineering under DAAD funded project within the frame work of Bangladesh Earthquake Engineering Network (BEEN), which is coordinated by BUET-CUET-KUET.
As the outcome of the above visit by the Coordinator of IEER, a joint collaboration agreement was signed between the department of Civil Engineering of Chittagong University of Engineering & Technology (CUET) and the University of Kassel (UNIKA), Germany named CUE-UNIKA agreement to create CUET as Center of Excellence in Disaster and Environmental Engineering.
Under the above agreement between CUET and UNIKA, a project Creating Regional Centers of Excellence in Disaster and Environmental Engineering Education in Sylhet and Chittagong was formulated and approved by DAAD and this 4 Years spanned project have been started from 2008 and will end in the year of 2011. The expected outcome of this project will be joint research, teaching staff exchange and joint Master and Doctoral degree in the field of Disaster and Environmental Engineering.
